However, British engineering giant has recently revealed a… yacht! Yes, that’s true: this ground-breaking concept was designed to showcase the advantages of advanced ship intelligence solutions.
“Crystal Blue has been designed specifically to show how new technology can meet the yacht sector’s increased demand for higher performance, greater operating ranges and increased levels of guest comfort, without impacting the environment,” says Oskar Levander, Rolls-Royce SVP Concepts and Innovation.

Crystal Blue has enough space for 12+ passengers and 12 crew. Operating in convoy, it has the Blue Shadow vessel used for transporting and launching the mother ship’s tender, helicopter and any other ‘toys’ that the yacht owner may have.
The cutting edge design combines battery power and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) to propel its 62-metre hull through the water.
One more special feature: the wheelhouse has been moved below decks. Special system monitors the yacht’s surroundings, so the crew can control and operate the vessel remotely. Thus on the upper deck there’s a place for two-level glass-topped atrium, complete with dining, seating and bar areas.

“Burning LNG has clear advantages over diesel for the yacht sector – there is no smoke, it doesn’t emit any unpleasant odours or fumes, and it meets stringent emissions regulations, allowing yachts to enter otherwise prohibited ecologically sensitive waters,” concluded Henrik Alpo Sjöblom, project manager in the Rolls-Royce Blue Ocean team.
